Surveys flag problems in general terms. These are the specific things worth checking in an older Clydesdale house before you agree a price.
Find the stopcock and the incoming main
Check the internal stopcock turns and look at the material of the incoming pipe. Grey, dull, slightly soft pipework is likely lead and should be budgeted for replacement — common in pre-1970 property across Lanark, Carstairs and Douglas.
Look in the loft, not just the boiler cupboard
Open tanks, unlagged pipework and old ball valves tell you the system's real age. A modern boiler bolted onto a gravity layout with 1960s pipework will still behave like an old system.
Lift the drain covers
Check for standing water, silt and root growth in the chambers. Standing water in a chamber means the run downstream is restricted, and that is worth a CCTV survey before you exchange rather than after.
Ask what the property is connected to
Rural properties around Biggar, Carnwath and Douglas may be on septic tanks and private water. Both are perfectly workable, but maintenance obligations and repair costs differ substantially from mains connections, so know before you buy.
Check radiators for cold bottoms
Run the heating and feel each radiator top to bottom. Cool lower sections across several radiators indicate a sludged system that will need cleansing, filtering and possibly some radiator replacement.
